Hook Up Meaning & Hookup Definition: Demystifying the Great Hookup Mystery in Hookup Culture
The “Hook Up” term is everywhere – casually dropped on Instagram, briefly alluded to on Monday at school or work, on the lips of all your single (and other open-minded) friends …
“Hook Up Meaning” and “Hookup Definition” – what do they mean exactly? The truth is, no one knows for sure, and that’s why it works so well for everyone. It’s exactly the right kind of ambiguity that is needed to accommodate anything as vague and potentially messy as anything two people can get up to.

Exactly what does “Hookup” mean, and how much of “Hooking Up” is really going on in our modern-day Hookup Culture?
One new study done by the University of Montana suggests that most young people are doing it, although no one quite agrees on what a “Hook Up” is.
According to Amanda Holman, the lead author of the study, a useful definition is “a sexual encounter (vaginal, anal, or oral sex) between two people who are not in a dating or serious relationship and do not expect anything further”. However, an online poll conducted by Buzzfeed shows up to 10 percent of their readers choosing to define a hookup as “you did everything BUT have sex”.
Looks like the jury’s still not out, folks – suffice to say, a hookup can be sexual, but it’s very definitely casual.
Now, you get the Hookup Definition already, we suppose?
The irony is that while it’s widely believed that “hook ups” is a huge cultural phenomenon that is eroding all manner of dating and romance, the truth is that casual sex (with no strings attached) is actually happening a lot less than social media can make it seem to be.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the percentage of high school students who have had intercourse dropped from 54 to 40 percent from 1991 to 2017.
Incredibly, in this digital age of Hookup Apps and online anonymity, people now in their early 20s are two and a half times as likely to be abstinent as Gen Xers were at that age; 15 percent report having had no sex since they reached adulthood – according to Jean M. Twenge, a psychology professor and author of iGen.
A whole host of possible explanations for this has been mooted, from the rise of online porn to economic pressures and anxiety rates.
So why does everyone think that everyone else is Hooking Up? We still like to think though, that despite the above statistics, Hookups remain popular among late teenagers, young adults, and even with more matured adults.
In Holman’s study of 274 university students, 54 percent of students reported having participated in a sexual Hook Up during the school year – but a far higher number was stated when students were asked about how many of their fellow students they thought were Hooking Up.
In other words, most students believe far more people were Hooking Up than the reality of it. “Thus students greatly overestimated the pervasiveness of Hookups within the general student culture,” the study said.
Firstly, because of the ambiguity of the term (and its Hook Up meaning), hooking up can encompass anything from full sexual intercourse to simply cuddling on the couch with some pizza.
Secondly, don’t believe everything you hear. “A greater number of males (63 percent) reported engaging in a sexual hookup versus females (45 percent),” and “males expressed more favorable attitudes toward Hook Ups.”
Since the participants in the survey were all heterosexual students from the same university, the results should really have been more or less equal, says Holman. Therefore, the math suggests that males are probably exaggerating their experiences.
Yes, people (both male and female) can and do lie about their sexual exploits and so-called experiences.
None of this is likely to come as a shock, which is why it is all the more important to be able to gain more clarity into the truth behind our current Hookup Culture.
Talking about Hooking Up is simply par for the course for any young adult in a social environment – 84 percent of students in the study reported that they had discussed theirs with friends in the previous four months.
Based on these results, Holman expressed concern that the gossip around “Hook Ups” may make the practice seem more common than it is, causing students to engage in potentially risky behavior because they believe everyone is doing it, and therefore it must be alright – or worse, the expected thing to do.
There are so many things to be celebrated about the opening up of our current sexual culture to be inclusive of diversity and orientation. In fact, the share of Americans who say sex between unmarried adults is “not wrong at all” is at an all-time high.
At the heart of this resolution to remove any notion of shame from the sex act is the belief that one is free to explore the boundaries of your own sexuality – just as you are free to not hook up should you choose not to.
Never be pressured into doing anything you’re not interested in or prepared to do simply because of social pressure. Enjoy yourself, be true to your beliefs, and remember to stay safe.
If you want it, Hook Ups is for you. If you don’t want it, then don’t get involved. Besides a Hook Up, there’s lots of other dating and relationship options available for you.
Having understood the REAL Hook Up Meaning and Hookup Definition, it’s time for you to consider the Type of Dating Relationships and the sort of Dating Partners you want.
Ask yourself this very simple and yet extremely basic question:-
1. Are you ready for a Serious Relationship? If yes, then you should focus on a Monogamous Relationship. A Romantic Relationship and Committed Relationship is most suitable for someone like you.
2. If you are not ready, then consider Casual Dating: Use Hookup Sites and Hookup Dating Apps, hit the pubs and clubs and enjoy nightlife. Approach hot ladies and hot guys out there who catch your attention. Enjoy your Hooking Up days whilst they last and make the most of Hookup Culture. Don’t let a day go by where you look back and regret – that you could have done (i.e. hooked up) more! Have fun with no regrets!
