Navigating through the modern world of dating can get complicated and missteps are bound to happen when things are not clear.
With popular hookup apps, being connected to one another gets easier but also could be a labyrinthine world, opened to plot twists if you’re lost on the meaning and definition of what a no strings attached relationship is.
You’ve probably stumbled upon this word “NSA” or “no strings attached” during conversations with friends and have been curious about it but never quite got the hang of it.
The definition and meaning of a NSA relationship is a relationship whereby you’re having sexual intimacy with someone, sans the assumption it will lead to a serious committed relationship.
In other words, if you sleep with someone else, it isn’t cheating because there is no long-term commitment between you two.
Some people even refer to NSA as hooking up and have been used interchangeably.
You want the physical connection with the other person but not the commitment and seriousness that comes with a long-term relationship.
You’re looking to emotionally support the other person and the last thing you want is to be tied down by responsibility, commitment and obligations.
You’re just looking for some fun and exploring your sexuality with different people.
Because you’re not tied down by any emotional ties, you can happily pursue anyone who tickles your fancy and you won’t feel guilty about pursuing them.
Monogamy is the last thing on your mind and you aren’t going to stop exploring the different fishes in the sea.
If you enjoy the thrill of the hunt of getting laid with different partners, NSA is for you.
You’re not looking for things to be heavy and want to keep things light and fun!
At the same time, you enjoy the physical connection you have with different people but that is as far as you are willing to go to when it comes to intimacy.
If you know getting physical would lead you to develop feelings for the other person, this type of relationship is not for you.
In many cases, many go in thinking they are cool with the arrangement and end up catching feelings for the other person.
And most of the time, the other person don’t feel the same way and won’t reciprocate your feelings.
This could lead to a potential heartbreak when you are actually craving for a serious commitment.
Don’t take this route if you know deep down you are a serious relationship kind of person.
There are others like you out there and just because others are doing it, it doesn’t mean it is the right thing for you.
This brings us to our next point.
Some people get into NSAs to fill up a void even though they may be open to a serious relationship.
This could range from trying to get over a breakup or you’ve given into it because that’s what is in front of you right now.
While NSAs are fun while the they last, you’re pouring in a huge amount of time and energy into these hookups.
This takes away your spot in the front line and time, when you do find someone who can give you a deeper relationship.
So, re-evaluate your needs and wants while determining what it is you’re really seeking for.
If looking for a serious relationship is what you want, it is worth taking the time and space to work on yourself while waiting for the right one.
If your opinion of yourself is deeply connected to other people’s actions and words, it is best to avoid NSA altogether.
It could eat you up emotionally as you could feel toss aside, hurt and not valued due to the nature of this relationship.
It could also lead to jealousy, especially when you know the other person is seeing other people.
All these negative emotions could take a toll on your overall well-being, which makes it unhealthy for you.
The only person who can answer this is yourself.
So, take the time to think about it and consider if an unattached relationship is honestly the best thing you need currently.
If you’re at a stage of your life where you’re ready for a serious relationship, then a NSA relationship won’t fulfil and satisfy you at this point.
If you’re a person who tends to be very busy and lead a hectic lifestyle where there is no room for anything serious, then a NSA relationship could be the right fit for you.
So, do you want a partner to share an emotional and physical connection with or a sexual partner to have fun with?
